well i have a full version of xp but it asks to activate smartdrv, but i proceded without it and have it try to install, i had it sit there for 1-2 hours and no action so i rebooted and read the ME readme on the floopy and it said type 4 lines to activate it, but that didn't work either

Just put smartdrv on a floppy, insert floppy, type smartdrv, hit enter, and away you go.

At least that's the way I do it.

You can probably download it somewhere.
Or if you have a box with Win95, 98 you can copy it from there.
But, why in the hell does WinXP wants smartdrv?
That's the first time I hear of this!

Anywhere. If you are using a startup floppy disk to get to Dos, it's nice to have it on there but if not any disk will do and you can exchanged disks once your computer starts up in Dos.

Sounds like your booting from a floppy to install xp. Consider booting from the winxp install disc. In the bios set up the cd as your first boot device and put your xp disc in the cd rom and reboot.
