wired router to wireless router

I have been looking around and you guys seem to have a very helpful forum going here.

Hope you can help.

First off, here is my network as it sits:

Cable modem connected to WAN port of wired linksys router
D-link wireless router connected to wired router. (trying different connection combos.)
2 wired computers, 1 wireless. need to be able to remove the wireless router without disrupting the rest of the network though.

My goal is to have all the computers be able to see each other and to access the Internet. I set the IP of the wired router to 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 and the wireless router to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0

I was able to connect to the internet earlier, but in the mess of trying to change things so I could access other computers too, I lost that ability.

What I need from you guys is to tell me how to hook this up. lol I have thoroughly run out of ideas.

Pretty much what do I need to connect from router to router (LAN to WAN, Uplink to WAN, uplink to LAN etc) and do I need a crossover or straight cable in there? Also, which IP's should I use?

I would like to be able to admin the wireless router from a wired computer going through the wired router if this will be possible in the end also.

Sorry about the long post. and thanks ahead of time for your help.

Robert

I'm assuming you want the linksys router to act as the DHCP server and the wireless router to act as a wireless access point?

If my assumption is correct, you will first need to disable DHCP on the wireless router and set it to function as a router rather than a gateway. You should find the information on how to do this in the router's manual. You also need to assign it a unique IP address in the same subnet (which you have already done). As long as the wireless router has a unique IP address you shouldn't have any problems accessing it for admin purposes.

You can then use a patch cable (straight through cable) to connect the uplink port of the wired router to any of the LAN ports on the wireless router.

If you want to share files, make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that printer and file sharing is installed and enabled on all computers.

thanks for the help. I will try it out when I get home. The step I was missing was changing the wireless router from gateway to access point. and I god mixed up on how to wire the 2 together. I'll post back on my results. Thanks

ok, goe everything set except for one thing. I cannot find a setting anyplace to change the wireless router from a wateway to a router (access point only). I checked the manual and looked through every menu in the setup and cant find it.

Here is a link to an emulator of the routers software if that help. the model is D-link DI-514.

Thanks once agian for your help.

It would appear that you only need to disable DHCP under the DHCP settings, and then assign a unique IP address under the LAN settings. I would also go ahead and disable the firewall under the Advanced tab until you know that you have connectivity. In fact, since you are only using it as an access point you probably don't need the firewall on the dlink.

Once you are done, it would be a good a good idea to shut down all computers, and unplug the cable modem, router and access point. After 30 seconds, plug the cable modem in and wait for it to synchronize. After the cable modem is synched, plug in the router and then the access point. Start up the wired computer(s) and verify that they are getting an IP address and have connectivity.

Then all that's left, is to configure the access point and client computer(s) for the wireless connection. And if we haven't missed anything, both the wired and wireless should be up and running with the linksys handing out IP addresses to both the wired and wireless client computers.

well I have messed around with settings for the past few days and this is what I got to work finally.

modem to WAN on wired router then uplink to LAN port on wireless router, as someone here said to do.

For some reason I had to give EVERYTHING a static IP. I dont think the wireless router was passing the IP's from the DHCP server in the wired router onto computers connection to it.

So the wireless router is set like this
IP 192.168.1.2 DHCP disabled

Wired router
IP 192.168.1.1 DHCP enabled but not doing anything

3 computers on network are IP's .1.3-.1.5

What is confusing me is that for a while one of the wired computers going to the wired router insisted that the default gateway was the wireless router (192.168.1.2) until I gave it a statip IP so I could manually change the default gateway to the wired router (192.168.1.1)

Thanks for all of your help. and I hope that this experience might assist you with any future issues you may encounter.
