Which DNS Server

Quick question.

Given WinXP, and an ethernet connection. When a VPN connection is made, a PPP WAN interface is created and has a different DNS server.

My question is, when resolving names (Especially when the two DNS servers will yeild different results) how does windows choose which DNS server to use?

The problem is that with the VPN active, windows is not using the VPN's DNS server and thus not resolving the name as we need it to.

assuming manual DNS server entries: by order in the DNS entry list (top to bottom)

note: even with an ISP (not LAN), you can enter the DNS server entries manually. Then you can put the LAN DNS IP at the top.

Or, if it is only one or two names being resolved incorrectly you could modify the HOST file on the affected workstation.

Ok, it states that it starts with the preferred adaptor, querying its DNS server first.

The resolver sends the query to the first server on the preferred adapter's search list and waits one second for a response.
How can I view or adjust this preference of adaptors to list the PPP WAN (VPN) connection as the preferred adaptor above the local LAN.

Editing the hosts file or chaning the DNS server isn't really an option as this involves may people in MANY different countries.

If Active Directory you could simply create a GPO and, put the modified HOST file in the sysvol folder for replication. Then script it out or make a little MSI file to do it.

Hmmm, I would need more details to come up with a different solution. I would really need to understand the problem better and test the actual affects of DNS with VPN. Although it sounds like one problem is with the basic design... using a publicly resolvable domain name for the LAN (private) domain.
