Maxtor Plus9 160GB Internal HD

I installed the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 160GB internal HD into a Hi - Speed USB 2.0 External Enclosure case, and connected to my Win XP operating PC.

First, is this a problem since it is suppose to be an internal HD?

A small icon called ‘Safety Remove Hardware’ appears in the lower right area of the taskbar. In the window called ‘Hardware Devices’, the USB 2.0 Storage Device USB Device is recognized. I click on properties and in the Device Status; it states the device is working properly.
Problem is there is no Drive letter showing up in My Computer.

Could it be something wrong with the drive?
Already talked with a hardware rep from Dell. We did the BIOS and everything. The only drive that showed up was the A:\
When you try to Explore (open) it to see if it is just a default drive, it would ask me to insert a disk! I don’t have a floppy installed!

Should I install internally first to see if it works properly?

There is a PowerMax .exe program that is only bootable from a floppy that performs diagnostic read/write verification on Maxtor and Quantum hard drives. Problem is I don’t have a floppy on my pc. I only have a CD RW drive and DVD Drive.

my brother has the same setup. he used an internal 160gig maxtor or wd hd and bought the external case for it. it really works great.

i believe you need to run some setup sofware that should have come on a floppy w/your hd. as you said b4 you do not have a floppy drive, however, you should be able to go to maxtor.com or similar site and dl the neccisary program to set up your new hd.

good luck

The disk may need to be partitioned and formatted. Use Disk Manager.

Yeah I loaded the cd software that came with the HD. Might have to go back and run it again or open it up and read more stuff thats there.

Thanks

That's the issue I'm having. Disk Manager dosen't recognize it. I can't partition it because a drive letter is not showing up.

Oh...

I have the same setup but with a Belkin and installed the drivers and everything works ok. The only problem was that my 160GB was only recognised as a 127GB.

Saying this though the Maxtor One Touch 250GB FW is the way I went when I wanted to store my DVDs for recording from and storage. I bought two.

I think the Maxtor’s One touch external enclosures are worth the extra.

If I find a solution, I will post it to you.

To be clear are you actually running Disk Manager? Start>Run and type

diskmgmt.msc

This is Disk Manager.

Verify that the HDD is shown in Device Manager (DM). If it does not appear in DM then it has not been recognised by windows.

If it does appear in Device Manager, it is also in Disk Management and just needs to be formatted or have a drive letter assigned.

There may be a drive letter conflict with a mapped network drive.

is it the same as right clicking 'My Computer' then 'Manage'? If so, I've done that, but not in Disk Management. but I will run diskmgmt.msc anyway. It shows up in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus as USB 2.0 Storage Device. No HDD Model number shows up. I guess it's by default because the HDD is in a USB 2.0 encloser.

You said there may be a drive conflict? Wouldn't a symbol (yellow) showup in the Device Manager? I didn't see any.

This might have posted twice. Sorry. I thought it was deleted.

I am using W2K Pro SP4.

Going to My Computer and right-clicking in space you get a context menu. Left-click on properties. System Properties applet appears. Go to Hardware>Device Manager.

See JEP image called Device Manager.

I cannot recall where the external HDD should go as I do not have mine connected right now.

Nevertheless you need to go to Start>Run>diskmgmt.msc

See if the external HDD is seen here.

Unless the HDD is partitioned, it will not appear in My Computer. Unless the HDD is formatted it will not be useable.

Now see if the unallocated HDD is seen in Disk Management. If it is, partition, format, and assign a drive letter. Reboot.

Now you should be able to see you external HDD in My computer, Device Manager and Disk Management as a partitioned and formatted external HDD.
