At Home Windows XP security question...

Hey all-

I have a XP Pro security question, here are the facts:

1) 2 hard drives: a) 160GB ( C:, E: and F: ) and b) 60GB ( D: )
2) All are partitioned as NTFS
3) 3 users: a) admin, b) me (with admin priv) and c) wife (user priv)
4) No networking, except to broadband internet

I'd like to make my game drive and data folders private (ie. no access for incorrect user). I have seen numerous posts on this before, and the answer is the same:

Right click folder or drive, goto security options and click private

I have these options but they are greyed out. Can someone tell me how to correct that and access these options?? I plan on make a home network setup with a possible server soon.

Most people say just login as admin and go from there, but I have the same result when I login as admin.

Please help, this is one of those things that is driving me batty.

Thanx!

You could disable simple file sharing and then it allows you to specify permissions for each user to the share.

To disable simple file sharing... open a folder, tools -> folder options -> view tab --> last checkbox at bottom of list

Ok...the best way to be able to do this is to go to these drivers/folders and right click on them and go to Properties. Then go to the security tab. Look for the user names that you do not want to access the certain drives/folders and click deny on each one of those check boxes. That will prevent them from accessing the folder/drive...it will say this to the user that you have disallowed for them to view:

Drive Letter:\Folder name not accessible.
Access is denied.

I know there is another way to make things in your personal folder under Documents and Settings\User Account name but, I can't remember exactly how to do that because I have mine turned on by default.

Just be careful and don't lock yourself out of your stuff....trust me....you don't want to do that. I've done it before by setting the wrong permissions. Lucky for me I outsmarted the machine be creating a new account and not putting it in that user group...

Thanks all.

I can't do any of those things though.

For instance, I go to my D: drive, it has all my game patches and game downloads under a folder called 'Game Patches'.

I right click on it, go to the sharing and security tab, and the make private box is greyed out... It's there but I cannot choose it.

I need to figure out how to get rid of that problem.
