CD-RW detected but not able to burn

I have just installed Windows Server 2003 on my machine. I have also installed a Memorex 52x24x52 CD-RW Internal drive. Windows Server installs drivers for it so when I go into my device manager it says its the correct drive. Says the model is a 2452AJ which I believe to be correct. When I open up My Computer it shows it as a CD-RW drive. Oh, and Nero 6 Ultra Edition is installed.

From experience on other systems Windows Media player allows you to copy to cd without any type of burning software. I've tried that with no luck. I opened up Nero 6 to burn to the drive and still no luck. Neither of the 2 programs will burn to the drive yet they detect it as my burner.

Is there something in Server like a service or something that I need to enable/disable preventing me from making cd's? What do I do so I can start burning?

are all of the cables in tight? has it worked on a different machine or OS? I have Server 2003 and a I/O Magic 52x24x52 Drive and it works fine so it isnt a service

if im wrong, someone correct me but i believe in order to use windows media player to burn cd's you need the right plugin like the nero or adaptec/roxio plugin which i think gets installed when you install your cd writing app.
you can look in the WMP preferences anyhow and see what plugin is in use.

in your case though, this doesnt seem to be an issue.
but what im curious to know is what exactly happens when you go to burn a cd?

in the case of nero, if you open the program up, and go up top to "recorder" then " choose recorder" make sure you have the cdrw selected and not the image recorder device.

The problem you are having isn't unusual. WMP doesn't support all drives. WMP won't support my BTC drive. I can't install the Adaptec engine. It may have something to do with my having both Adaptec and Nero installed. But since I can burn WMA files with Nero or Adaptec, I'm not worried.

I have seen on some burner software etc..that it WONT work on 2000 server...so maybe that applies to 2003 server also.

Somehow I figured out how to get some burns going through Nero. Windows Media Player 9 still wont burn though, I can get all the files set up to burn, hit the burn button, it goes through the process. When I open up the cd, there is nothing on it. Do the exact same thing in Nero and it works just fine. Also I remember that Windows XP had a built-in burning capability where you could just put all your files into a folder, right click the folder and select "burn to cd". I've found 2003 doesn't have this capabilty. So it looks like I just need to use Nero only from now on. But thanks everyone for the help.

Are you using an Nvidia chipset motherboard?

There are some issues with nvidia ATA drivers and some burners.

If you are it may be necessary to uninstall these and replace them with the Windows default driver....or alternatively download the latest Nvidia update from Windows Update and try that.
