98SE hang on shutdown solved....but.....

I need a "real" solution.

I've religiously run WinME and had very few problems and also run XPhome on a Dell I use.

I finally started (mostly out of MS boredom) using 98SE on some builds. (Dunno if that was a good idea or not). Anyway, this particular one is one I'm just messin' with..........specs:

ECS N2U400-A (400fsb) Socket A mobo (nforce chipset)
512mb Geil Golden Dragon PC3500
20Gb Maxtor 7,200rpm
Athlon XP 3000+ (400fsb)
Sapphire 9600 128mb

All's finally well.......(tried ENUM trick coming from another board......no-joy......fresh-install is DEFINITELY the way to swap mobos!)

But......it was hangin' on shutdown.....(splashscreen just staring at me). Sooooo I tried EVERYTHING written on Google or MS about fixing it. Almost ready to give up but .....PRESTO.....disabled the LAN in device manager>network>properties and that did it. (Believe me, I tried ALL the 98shutdown/hang tricks........hours worth!!) Anyway, that solves the hang problem, but I DO need LAN to access the internet. Any suggestions on what to do now besides disabling/re-enabling every time I boot the computer??? TIA!!!

Don't know if it would help at all but just for grins why not reinstall the drivers? Maybe check to see if there're newer drivers for it.

Is there an option in device manager to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"?

I've seen cases where installing 98 with everything hooked up to the system would cause problems.

On my installs I load 98 with only memory, 1 HDD, and video card.

After I get it up and running I add the other componets one at a time with the LAN card last.

You might try uninstalling the card in Device Manager, shut down, remove the card, and reboot.

If it still shuts down properly I would then try to reinstall the card and see if that works.

Did you install the M$ patch for this issue? Go to the 4th one down on this page
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=90
The file is Windows 98SE Patch - 004756us8.exe

Often times the Win98SE install will run fine for a few days and this issue appears for no reason, other times it appears immediately after installation.

Answering questions from the top.........

Yes, I've tried the "let windows shut off" option on and off and neither affects it.

I haven't tried uninstalling/reinstalling but it's onboard LAN. However, I'll still give it a try.

I don't think the patch addresses this issue specifically. I'll use the patch as a last resort, but since I know *what's* causing it, I'd rather try the manual solutions first.

I'll try removing/reinstalling first & see where it gets me. I'll report back.

Thanks gang!

Nvidia Nforce MCP network controller <-----the culprit

I uninstalled it (as well as a dial-up adapter that got in there somehow too), then rebooted, then tried to reinstall but no-joy.

Gnashed teeth for about half an hour 'cuz none of the drivers on the motherboard CD that were in LAN>drivers>win98 were the correct one.

Instead the correct driver is under IDE>ethernet>win98 ........GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!! (Why do these people put stuff in hiding places like this!!!!!!!!)

Anyway, long-story short is I'm back up & running. All's well but still the hang on shutdown and this is definitely the culprit!! For those familiar with what the "PATCH" specifically addresses, is it worth trying the patch on this situation or better off not??? <exhausted, yet again>

OK, if anybody could please give their feedback, here's what I've done...........

Updated a couple drivers..........see here.........

http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/dw_sp...product_id=380

Now there's the audio and IDE driver. The audio seems to have updated correctly. Since the ethernet drivers are within the IDE drivers, I did that one too, specifically to update the ethernet (LAN) since that's what's causing the hang. But...........while the audio drivers show updated to 2003, ANY of the drivers I check in Device Manager for IDE (hard disk controllers) or LAN (network controllers) show old dates & the IDE drivers appear to be simpy plain-jane '99 drivers.

Are the drivers taking correctly & just not showing me a later date? (Totally confused!!!)
