98 system resources

I have a problem with system resources, in win 98se. I installed microsoft arcade games, and even clicking on the icon freezes the computer, can't set the clock, burn a cd,play a game online, or anything.
Even a fresh reboot, I connected, came here posting this question and am already down to 65% on system resources. I can boot into safe mode, and play all the non 3d games without problem, so I have some kind of a conflict right? While in safe mode, I deleted all the other drivers from previous soundcards/video cards and such, but once back to windows, it didn't help.
Clicking a game Icon the hourglass shows busy, nothing happens, CNTRL>ALT DELETE, shows it running.click end task, I get a BSOD with this error: 0167:BFFAADOB.
I went to the m$ site couldn't find anything there, bought mem boost, didn't help, scandisk, defrag, still the same.
The box is 8 inches off the floor on a plastic stand(static Electicity?), could it be related to the pile of wires behind the box?speaker, power, joystick, ect?I did a clean format about two months ago,had this problem a while.it does seem the HDD light is on all the time, and reaction is a little delayed. I'm out of ideas.
Help!!

That sorta sounds like your drives are in DOS compatability mode. Does Device Mangler indicate such? After your format did you correctly re-install the mb drivers? It may be a bus mastering problem caused by the use of incorrect mb drivers.

probably not the advice you are looking for:

I would format the drive, fdisk the MBR, and re-install Windows.

I like to do a local install off the hard disk because its faster and the computer will never ask you for the Win98 CD again.

something like this:

Using a known-clean (virus free) Win98 boot floppy that is write protected:

boot the computer, fdisk the MBR, format the drive, reboot from floppy with CDROM support

Create a directory on the hard disk called "win98cd" (e.g. C:\>mkdir win98cd) next copy into it the win98 directory from the Windows CD (e.g. D[cdromdriveletter]:\copy win98 C:\win98cd)

remove the CD

run setup from C:\win98cd

If ya got more than one stick of memory in it, try changing them out one at a time.

Might be that one of them is giving problems.

Check in the BIOS settings that the memory setting are conserative or on AUTO.

Biggest thing that locked up my games was the sound card esp with newer games. The on board sound card just couldnt handle what the program was asking or when I did have my new card I had to go into bios and disable the onboard sd card, midi port, game controller, and AC97 sb 16 emu. After doing that I had no probs with my games.

Ryo, I did disable on board sound. didn't help. I have tried 3 different cards, even bought a new one, still didn't help. I just got back on line after reformatting this morning. I will see if that fixed it. May have gotten a virus or something. I tried to type bump this morning, andf everytime I hit the M key it minimized the screen. Well it's working better so far, but I haven't tried the games yet, will let you know

Everything works ,but the HDD light is staying on all the time. The HDD is searching the whole time also. Does this sound like a PSU problem, or MOBO, HDD or what? This was part of the reason I formatted in the first place. It will burn cd's, all the hardware works just the HDD light stays on all the time.

I'm going to put the HDD in another computer see if it's the HDD

I fixed it. I took the cover off the PSU, and used compressed air to blow out the dust , put it bcak togeather and now it works fine. The HDD light goes out and it works perfect

Thanx for all the help

Brainchild:

"Congrats!"

I would never have suspected the PSU at all, never mind cleaning it out!

That's one for the books!
