is "dual" networking possible?

i have a pretty good idea on how to network myself with my school's network...its how i get the internet. i just acquired a netgear ethernet hub and a second computer. i dont know the specs on the hub but it has 4 ports. i want to be able to network my two computers together and still have them be able to access the net. will i have to set up ANOTHER network between the computers in addition to the school network? oh yea...the school only issues a single ip address. thanks for the help.

Two ways to do it 1. buy a router instead of a hub -it gets the school ip and the two computers run on a seperate internal IP address, both access the net and each other
2. Get a second network card for your computer, 1-goes to school network IP the other is an internal IP to connect to your other computer, shared internet is an option if you enable Internet Sharing on it

you probably need a router....a router would take the one Ip address from the school and change it to two internal addresses for your 2 comps. A router usually also has a built in 4 port switch to conenct to tother computers etc..a switch being just a smarter version of a hub.

--

I think that you could put a second nic in the comp that is online and then come from that nic to the other comp by using "ICS"..internet connection sharing.....really ICS is just sort of a way to let the first computer itself act as a router..it would take the IP from the school and then give internal IP's to the other comps thru that other nic.....for instance you could come from that second nic to the hub and then to other computers etc. (or just hook from the second nic straight to another comps nic with a crossover cable)

-----

either way, I dont think you can just take that hub and hook it to the wall jack and then come out of it to your two comps....I dont think that will work. Just ask the school is it ok to use a router...you can get a router for less than $40 usually and sometimes as cheap as $19 after rebate.

the comp and the hub were hand me downs...i dont have the means to shell out dough for a router.
i would still be able to set up a separate network from the school one...just not using the internet right?

well I am not sure what will happen if you come from the wall jack to the hub....if it just gives the ip address to one comp and ignores the other..then you can still network them together thru the hub....but just one will have the network.

you would just connect each comp to the hub

I am not totally sure what you would do with the second comp as far as the ip address...hmmmm..maybe someone else can chime in....if you leave a machine to its own self it will get a 169.254.x.x ip address....but the other comp will have a different ip....

to "see" each other the comps need to have ip addresses on the same "subnet"...

---

what do you think the school says about having two comps...if they arent against it maybe they will help you set it up.

------

or you can just get another network card for the online comp...and then you can do the ICS internet connection sharing thingy and both will be online and both will be able to "see" each other for file sharing

well the school issues an ip address for you to connect to their network...allowing internet access and i dont think they are willing to give out a second..just so i can link up my computers. i could definitely set it so that they can BOTH access the net at the same time...and i could set it so they access each other, but not both. i think ill just set up a network for the two and just switch when i need to go online. thanks for the help

If you dont want to cough up the coin for a router then as John and I pointed out you can share the net useing ICS and a second NIC just type in "internet connection sharing " in XP and it should tell you how to do it

well what I did for my school connection...

I had one ethernet jack in my room. four puters. (two were old pentiums, lol.) so I got a crossover cable and plugged that into the wall jack. I plugged the other end into the "input" jack on a switch (a hub is like a switch). my puters each plugged into one of the 8 possible jacks on the back of the switch via regular ethernet cables and into the NIC cards in those puters.

I was able to access the internet anytime, whether the other puters were on or not. worked like a charm.

now if I could only figure out ICS in win2k pro using a dial-up modem!

*edit:
my puters weren't on their "own network" by any means...they were just allowed to access the internet using this method. all the puters had their own names in the Workgroup and did not noticeably slow down my T1 connection. I have to tell ya, going from a dedicated T1 line to 56k really hurts!
