Defragmenting a Hard Drive!!

Ok people I need to give some mantainance to my harddrive to keep it speedy....

I use regulary the defragmenter that comes with windows xp....

My questions is there another third party software that makes a better job?

the software included with Windows XP is a slimmed down version of Executive Software's Diskeeper. I am not sure what version of the engine it runs though.

I perfer to use the full version of the Diskeeper software as it does boot time defrag and also keep the page files in-tact.

http://consumer.execsoft.com/diskeep...per.asp?RId=50

The other software which is highly recommended is O&O Software Defrag. http://www.oo-software.com

I think either software is good and is as much as a wise investment in a computer software as is a good anitvirus package.

Norton System Works 2003

The Win Doctor and such help keep windows and disk problem at bay.

I recently bought it for $9 " I think it went up a little"

It also includes Anti Virus for one year

got it here http://www.directron.com/sys.html

Don't forget to run a through scan disk

rt clk the C: drive clk properties clk tools clk error checking

check both boxes select yes to run upon reboot

Regarding the error checking utility in Tools:

It has been my experience that it rarely finds errors on the drive.

In fact, in the last 2 years mine has never found any.

However in the recovery console running chkdsk /p does find errors even though running chkdsk with no switches does not.

If errors are found then the switch to use is /r.

User: Stay with the one included in Windows XP.
Power User: I highly recommend O&O's Defrag.

I downloaded O&O to trial it....

so far was a quick defrag on my 50 gig partition less than 15 minutes.... not bad I have like 75% used, I expected something like the old defraggers that you had to leave the machine for hours to complete de job.

I was surprised that it finished so quickly.
