Most desktop icons look alike...

Hello,

I'm working on a computer for a friend, and have never come across a problem such as this.

O/S: Windows ME (yes, I know, I know)

On the desktop, there are the standard icons(My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin, IE), then there are others for programs like Adobe, CD burning, RealPlayer, etc.

All the standard icons(Windows icons) are fine. But, all of the other program/application icons have an overlay of some other icon on them.

Here's one of those times where a picture says a thousand words.

So, what do you think? How can I get them back to normal?

I've tried just clicking Refresh, I've rebooted, but the icons have been messed up for a few months.

Try grabbing TweakUI and use the REBUILD ICONS feature.

Just FYI, you don't need to use TweakUI to do that. All you gotta do is find the hidden file named ShellIconCache in the Windows directory and delete it, then restart Windows.
