What's a remote switch?

Hey, what's a remote switch? I know it goes from the head unit to the amp, but what does it do? I'm guessing it turns the amp on and off.

There are quite a few electronic devices that have remote switches...would you care to define which one you are referring to?

What I'm told is its a wire that goes from the head unit of a car system and connects to the amp. But the person who told me this doesnt know why its there and now its making me curious to know.

Let me know if its still unclear.

Umm..... they kind of did. A head unit.... like a cd player... and an amp...

.... and, yes, a remote switch turns the amp on and off. Car steroes have a wire just for that. Its even called the remot wire. Hook it to the amp, and the radio switches the amp on and off. Turn on the radio, and the amp turns on, turn it off amp goes off.

If it is similar to the "remote switch" as used with ATX type PSUs in computers, it means that the actual heavy current power switching takes place inside the Power Supply (usually by an electronic switch or a latching relay) rather than by the physical switch (the one you actually press or flip) itself. Therefore you can use a lighter duty switch and much lighter wire to the physical switch than would be needed if it actually switched all the current.
. Or, it could just mean something else entirely as mentioned by the others.
