Finding linux version?

Hi, I'm trying to find out which version of Linux my ded. server is running...is there an easy way to do that remotely? Looking for an ssh command or something.

If you just want the kernel version you can use uname
uname -r
If you want the distro it *should* be in dmesg (right at the top)
dmesg | head -n 1

uname will give you a lot of the info you are looking for.

Hmmm well that's some progress! Still not exactly sure what this means though.

The output was:

Linux my.server.com 2.4.25 #1 SMP Fri Feb 27 17:44:58 MST 2004 i686 i686 i386 GN
U/Linux

What does that translate to? I'm looking for the Redhat x.x name.

That is your output from dmesg | head -n 1 ?

Ah, no that was from uname -a. Your responses came in at the same time and I missed yours. dmesg | head -n 1 gave me exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a ton.
