New Server
The company that i work for has two properties and is getting ready to aquire a third. I have been searching for a low cost server for the smaller propertie that will serve about 10 users with just basic file and print sharing and run a couple small databases. The server will also be running windows server 2003 and be hooked up to the main property via VPN.
I am looking for an AMD solution with RAID 1 and probably SATA. I am not sure if i should go with a "server" board or just something running maybe the nForce2 chipset. Also, should i go with a Athlon with a Barton core (512K L2 Cache) or maybe a Athlon 64 or Opteron. I am looking to keeping the price below $2000 and hopefully also be able to include a tape backup.
Thank you for any suggestions.

so you are looking to build one or buy one?

I know the guys who use dedicated server boards will swear by them...for their reliability etc. (like the expensive supermicro and tyan type boards)

I agree DVNT1 but i would like to build one just for the experience and i was still hoping to be able to build a good reliable server.
Also, i have not looked at the Proliant DLs because they are rack-mount and there is no rack yet. My company likes to keep costs down and spend as little on IT as possible.
I am still interested in building though.

Understandable.
Btw, the JNCS 'Bedrock' Series B1500 1U Blade Server is also a rack mount.

for a server you'll probably want a board with ECC memory as well as disk mirroring via RAID. For that many users, processing power isnt going to be an issue.

JP | I'd say go with either Tyan or SuperMicro.

I have looked at RAID solutions and the Tyan line of server products, but DVNT1 brought up my main concerne with having a hardware failure and not having the same response i would get from HP as far as replacement parts go.
I was just wondering if anyone had setup their own server for an office environment and what kind of reliability they had.
Thank you all for the replies.
