thats only what you need to connect to a non-XP machine....
In windows XP simply goto start --> programs --> accessories --> communcations --> remote desktop connection.

Only thing is to make sure the remote desktop service is enabled (which many places recommend turning off simply for security purposes if you dont use it).

Yes, that's the Remote Desktop software....that's just the client software though. If you're running XP or 2k3 all you have to do is go to My Computer -> Right click -> Select Properties -> Click the Remote tab -> Select Allow Users to connect remotely to this computer -> click Select Remote Users -> type in the user names that you want to access the PC....if you are an administrator on the computer you already have access -> OK -> OK.

To setup the rest of RD you just have to take the client software and type in the IP address and it'll show you the Windows login screen where you just type in your user name and password. If you have a router and want to access your network from the outside you'll need to forward port 3389 (TCP) to the computer that you are going to access. That's all there is to it.

Oh, to open up the client software if you are on XP go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection.

Hmm.. I want something more configuratble.. with passwords/users groups etc... something that runs as an app and/or service.

So is PC Anywhere the way to go?

You can do that...just create new users and assign them to user groups that you make in Windows. You can set what features you want your users to be able to have via the group policy editor.

Also, not sure about PC Anywhere because I've never used it.

EDIT: Remote desktop can do almost anything that you want it to do but, you just have to know how to do it...it's not all in one central location. I don't know if all of those features are in XP because I use everything on Server 2k3 which of course has more features because it's meant for doing things like that.

pc-anywhere is in my imo far better... but then again its not free (Although I think it only costs like 30-50 dollars if you get it from a bulk store or a slightly older version)
