Problem I can't pin down

I can't get my net card to release.

First my wife's HD starts making niose and not booting (sometimes) So I backed up a few files we need to keep. and I changed to a smaller and older hd 3gig from a 6gig. Installed win98 and would find the OS loosing files after I install the RTL8139 drivers. best I could come up with to fix the problem was to copy the missing files from another win98 PC. I now can get the system up and running but can't get the net card to connect to my router or release and renew.

I think the DHCP is set right and even tried assinging a gatway address

Could the old HD cause the problem with the newer drivers?

doesnt seem like a hd would cause any such problems.

have you tried the windows updates?

what about the updated motherboard drivers etc?

Since you "installed 98" would suggest that you update the NIC drivers or uninstall them and then reinstall. Not likely to be a HD problem. Missing files may indicate a conflict with hardware/software, corrupted critical files, malware problem, or possible virus.

Also try ipconfig_release then shut down and reboot do not do a restart. Shut down and reboot will cause the pc to send a request for an IP and see if you pick up the correct IP

Still not real fixed The net card workes now and I could even install the sound card but the PC is very not responding. After one operating the next stops to a ctr-alt-del shutdown. It is a old board but don't want to trash it if I can help it. Could it be a powersupply problem? It will stall even when I try to reinstall windows.

As JP says winipcfg will work but IMO it is good to know ipconfig for the OS vers that don't have winip. What OS has SFC. that is a neat pro.
