how are you trying to format the drive? are you using a floppy boot disk? and if you are what type....

Welcome to the forum!
if you are going to install Windows XP you can just boot off the cd and it will format the drive for you.
if its w98se then you can boot off a floppy and type in
format c:
does it already have a partition on it or is it a new drive or what??
maybe if it doesnt have a partition on it, it might give u that error.

IT DOES HAVE A PARTITION IT IS WINDOWS 98SE AND I AM BOOTING OFF OF FLOPPY

No need to yell..You might repartition it using fdisk, and then see if the format will work correctly.
