Cant connect XP to NT because of NetBIOS, WINS or something!

Hi all! I just installed Windows XP Pro in a LAN which has several other PCs logged in this NT server! The server uses NetBIOS, SO I gotta have THhe NetBIOS protocol installed, already did that, Now when I try to specify a domain under the "Computer name" tab it says it doesn't exist! then it tells me to click on details and says something about the domain name under NEtBIOS being different and that I should configure WINS! I tried configuring WINS by checking that box that says Net|BIOS over TCPIP and also tried adding the server IP. No luck so far! I can ping the server by its IP number, but not through the name, I can't see it through Explorer either, by typing in the address bar or clickng the networking thing! This same PC was working fine before it had to be formatted! Please help! How do I make it see the server?

are you sure the firewall is off in XP??

also in XP Pro there is something called "simple file sharing" which is designed for workgroups...maybe check to make sure it is on.

Also..."tcp/ip over netbios" should be on.

I am not in front of an xp machine right now..but you should find tcp/ip over netbios listed under the "wins" tab......go to "network connections" ..right click, click properties...click to highlight "tcp/ip"..click properties..click "advanced" click "wins" (something like that anyway, lol)

Just tried that NetBIOS Over TCPIP again, Firewall is off, The simple file sharing is checked! Eveything's ok!!!! Still doesnt work! The only thing I haven't tried yet is restarting the server! would that make a difference?

its probably a strightforward thing..I just dont know much about NT.

Iknow NT had the text files where you have to enter the info etc..I cant remember the names of them tjough, lol.

could it be a permissions thing?
