C&C Generals: Zero Hour

Hey all,
I've been having problems with Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour.
It only really acts up when I'm doing the single player Skirmishes...

My system:
MSI KT6 Delta-LSR KT600 Motherboard
Athlon XP2600 Barton
Geforce4 Ti4200 128m
768 Megs PC2700
Windows XP Pro

Ok, what happens is that the game will run FINE when I first start playing, but after a few minutes, it starts to slow down a bit. Then it starts getting really laggy and jerky.. I mean so laggy that I sometimes have to sit and wait for about 10 seconds before it starts responding again.
Keep in mind that this is in SINGLE player, not over the internet at all.
This is also a fresh install from about 2 weeks ago of XP Pro.
It will run all of my other games PERFECTLY and without any trouble. I just have a problem with Zero Hour.
I've adjusted all the game settings, video card settings, defragged, check disked, ran Anti-Spyware programs, registry cleaners, disabled firewalls and anti-viruses, but nothing seems to work.
Has anyone else had this problem with Zero Hour??
Anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
It's starting to get a bit irritating, because the game is so fun, yet it's painful to play sometimes...

I'm kinda new with Windows XP, so what all Can I disable in the Startup menu? I went to msconfig and saw some stuff in there, but wasn't sure what needed to be kept running...
