Disk Write Error (maxtor 80gb)

i hate computers...

i just got this brand new replacement hard drive shipped to me. it's an 80 gig maxtor ata/133 or something (i dont know what all this crap means). i installed it, using maxtors own software, and now every 20 minutes or so i get a blue screen error.

------------------------------------------------------------
Disk write error

Unable to write to disk in drive D:
Data or files may be lost.

Press any key to continue.
------------------------------------------------------------

it's the exact same error i got with the original drive that i had to send back. the only dif is that my comp doesnt seem to sieze up every now and then between blue screens. i dont get it. this drive is supposed to work. is it possible that it's not compatible with my motherboard? why is there a thousand different kinds of hard drives out there? does anyone even know what all this ata, ide, eide, dma bs is. something's seriously wrong. i think my computer might be killing these hard drives. i need help.

my comp's an amd athlon "1500+", 256 ddr ram, asus a7s333 motherboard (or something). it already has a western digital internal eide ultraata/100 hard drive or somesh*t that's working fine

anyone know anything about this stuff? i'd really appreciate some solid answers cuz right now i'm ready to swap this hd for some c4 and send er on back to maxtor

I had one of those motherboards and I never had any problems with hard drives. You might want to check the jumpers to make sure they are set right. Also do you know what type of power supply you have? There might be a voltage problem.

From your description, I presume that you have a Windows 9x flavour. Windows NT OSes get the same error, but tuck it neatly away.

What is happening is that Windows is sending a write, and the acknowledgement of the transaction is not being received in a timely fashion. The issue is probably not with the drive. While it can be caused by many things, IDE drivers and clogged PCI and IDE busses are common causes.
