2.5" HDD ghosting problem

I'm trying to ghost an old hdd with win95 onto a new larger hdd, i saved the image to a towers hdd, and used an ide adapter to put the new 2.5" in the tower. I successfully ghosted the drive, but when i try to boot in the original laptop, ALL of the system files have random corrupted names. Is this because norton ghost wasn't designed to copy fat16 drives? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

From what I've seen with Ghost is you have to use the same file format on the drives.

If you are using FAT 16 on one drive you have to use FAT 16 on the other. This also goes with FAT 32 you need the same file system on both.

I've tried to put a FAT 16 file system onto a FAT 32 and it just doesn't work.

If you have Win95 B or C you have to convert the drive to FAT 32. You can do this by running the convert utility in the "Start-programs-accessories-system tools- drive convert". Or cheat like me and find CVT.EXE and run it from DOS.

could it be some sort of thing where fat16 only goes up to a certain size?? and the new drive is beyond that size??

What if you make a smaller partition on the drive first and then ghost to it instead...that way it wont be above the fat16 size limit.

(I am guessing here)

-----

best bet is to go to symantecs website and simply look up the model/year ghost that you are using and see if it handles fat16...I would think it would though.

Hey Siliconjunkie I thought that I'd add FAT 16 can only make a max partition size of 2.1G.

You must be thinking of doing an install of Win NT4 where you could make the partition size 4G.

i'm not sure which 95 this is, if perchance if it IS ver A, will I stilll be able to convert it...the pc itself limits the hdd to 8.3gb i think due to hardware limitations. Thanks a lot to all of you

You can't convert Win 95 (original) or version A to FAT 32. They were based on the older DOS 6.2x file system -> FAT 16.

Win 95 B and C were based on FAT 32.

Easy way to check is to right click on My Computer and go to properties. You will see the version number if it is Windows 95 or Windows 95B or Windows 95C.

Edit - Or does it show up as Windows 95 OSR 2? It's been ages since I worked with 95
