Spyware ISSUES!!!

well ok,, so a friend asked if I could help speed up her computer, instead of actually going and doing it myself,, I told her to download ad-aware and run it.. She did it found some 300 spyware files and removed them.... Well then the fun starts now when she clicks Internet explorer it wont work,, she says it just keeps flickering at her about some error report.. Well,,,, we were talking over aol instant messenger,,, so I though huh must be an IE problem as we still had a connection.. So we tried to repair IE through control panel but get this error


due to the following errors: version 3/0/8168 of file ATL.DLL exists, but the version needs to be greater

I tell her to reboot,, when she does now she can't get on AIM anymore,,, but all the light are working properly on her modem and the internet connection is ok

However Internet explore 6 and Aol instant messenger cant connect anymore...
She is using windows 98

Sounds like a system file has gotten messed up somehow, but unfortunately i don't know much more to tell you except to run system file checker and if it finds problems, stick in your windows cd and have it repair the damaged files.
Also if IE still wont work and you don't want to reinstall windows just for IE, try a different browser. Most of the "alternative" browsers are much better/more secure/have more features anyway.

be aware spybot doesnt like adaware but both will run just fine.

malware uses .dll files to launch. Often when using spybot ar adaware, you kill the actual script but it doesnt remove the "call program"
One advantage of XP is you can go back to the last known good configuration by means of the system restore. (start>help and support>system restore)and repair problems automatically. You may lose any data or programs installed since last restore point.
Fortunately with 98, reinstalling on top of itself is a good way to repair/replace missing or corrupted files.
