l2 cache dword???
hello
a friend suggested to me that windows does not automatically recognize the cpu's l2 cache, and that this can be remedied by
regedit--hkey local machine--current control set--control--session manager--memory management, then right click on secondleveldatacache, click modify, check the decimal box, then enter your cpu's l2 cache in the "edit dword value" box and click "ok"
anybody know if this is true, correct, ok,??

Yep its true it is the correct way to change the cache size, iv done it before and found there was zero difference in anything. A while back this was discussed in the techimo DC forum I think. I dont beleive anyone found a differnece at least with ECCp.

The cache registry value is only applicable to processors having an off-die L2 cache, such as the original Pentium 2. The setting has absolutely no effect for processors with an integrated L2 cache.

| thanks J. ..............the plot thickens............this would suggest that my system thinks i have 256 l2 cache (my dword is 0)when i actually have 512. It would also suggest that there's no need to change to decimal from hexidecimal when changing the dword value, as values of 0, 200 and 400 are interpreted as 256, 512 and 1024 respectively.
wots FWIW mean.
ok back to work.........then some "how to back up and restore registry research.......before experimenting with xp 64.

Of course I did the edit! To be honest I didn't see any difference, but -- also -- it didn't harm anything either. I suspect any benefits wouldn't be measurable outside of specific bechmarking programs. I run SETI@Home, and there is enough variation in time required to process WUs, I'd have to do a statistical anaylsis over hundreds of WUs to see if there is a measurable benefit.
Bottom line: GO FOR IT!!! No harm done, and just maybe....
