reinstall xp on partitioned hardrive

This might sound a stupid question but,Do any problems arise if you reinstall xp on a partioned hardrive?
And will it work OK ?I am writing this for my dad whos computer's on the blink and having all sorts of problems and thought might be worth putting a fresh install back on Hence previous quetsion.

Yes, you can reinstall XP over top of it's self. I have never had any luck fixing any problems this way but you can try it.

yes it will work but in the long run cause you more grief

so you meant as well do a format ,clean install
