Phoshopt 7 won't work ater having Photoshop CS installed.

well, my subject pretty much says everything.. I installed photoshop CS on windows XP, and photoshop 7 will not work anymore. It loads ok all the way until it finishes checking out all the fonts, then it says it encountered an "unrecoverable error" and shuts down... I thought it was the fonts, but then, photoshop CS loads fine, and my quarkxpress 5, which also checks for fonts, also loads fine.

I did the logical thing and uninstalled photoshop 7, then reinstalled it again... nothing, same situation occurred. I know I might try unstalling photoshop CS and try everything again, but I don't understand this uncompatibility.

any ideas on why this might be happening?

confict between common files or dlls perhaps?
I'd assume CS updated files that adobe 7 uses, but since they are newer 7 cant read em...
Just decide which one you like better and keep only that version installed I guess is the best way to go...

Nope, can't be that. I've got 7 and installed CS and I just checked, it runs just fine, I opened a file in 7 no problem.

You may have to uninstall both of them, clean out their registry entries and try again.

I'm wondering if perhaps you've used 7 alot and the registry has photoshop bloat that is causing the problem. I haven't used photoshop but once since I installed XP fresh.

My bet is some kind of registry bandit.

hm both work fine here (i ask myself why i have it still installed =), did you first installed CS and then 7.0 or first 7.0 and then CS because then CS could have overwritten some files as said ^^

Did you install CS to it's own directory and not upgrade 7? They should both be able to work. I have 'em both installed on the same drive and same partition, no problem. I've even run them both at the same time (once) and they worked fine.

Make sure they are not sharing plug-in directories. Give them each their own directory. If you suspect some fonts are the cause then just temporarily remove all but your basic fonts and see if ps7 will start then.

When you uninstalled 7, did you also go and delete all the preferences and settings? They are usually here:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0

I'd unistall both, then run Regcleaner. Plus do what OUT recommended.

Then install Adobe 7, and if it works ok, then install CS...

thanks for all the replies... I'll do the uninstalling and then tell you what went on... weirdest thing of all, the key shortcuts don't even work in photoshop CS... I have to cop-paste using the menu... I thought it might have been a virus, but I scanned everything twice and it seems to be fine.

I'll uninstall, clean regs, and then post back. Thanks again.

By the way, is Regcleaner something that is part of the windows XP OS or is a separate program that should be downloaded somewhere ? (no april fool's, please :-)
