checking bandwidth usage in linux

is there some easy command line way to check the bandwidth that is in use and or the total since start up?

i'm currious to see what my webserver uses at a given point.

its running slackware 9.1 if that helps.

ifconfig will show you the total transmit and received bytes on each interface.

You can use mrtg or ifmonitor, google for them. ifmonitor requires a sql database, mrtg is a bit of a pain.

There is also IP Accounting in the 2.4 kernel I believe.

You can also use Bandwidth Monitor (bwm) to give you a rough idea of realtime bandwidth usage, something like this....
Code:
Bandwidth Monitor 1.1.0

       Iface RX(KB/sec) TX(KB/sec) Total(KB/sec)

       teql0 0.000 0.000 0.000
          lo 0.000 0.000 0.000
      dummy0 0.000 0.000 0.000
        eth0 0.098 0.000 0.098
       teql1 0.000 0.000 0.000
        eth1 0.000 0.000 0.000

       Total 0.098 0.000 0.098

Hit CTRL-C to end this madness.
Regards

ed
