DELL 1801Fp or 1901FP LCD under 1024X768?

How does the DELL 18' or 19' utralsharp LCD monitor look at other resolutions? The native resolution of both LCDs is 1280X1024. However, 1280x1024 is a bit pushing for me. What will these LCDs look like under 1024*768? Can anyone who owns one answer this?

I mostly use LCD for web surfing, email, word processing, basic photo viewing/editing, and DVD watching. I heard that LCDs are horrible under resolutions other than their native resolutions. However, I would like to have the opinions from the actual users.

Thanks!

By "pushing", do you mean the text is too small? This can be easily fixed by just selecting larger text, which allows you to use the native resolution.

I can tell you from personal experience that using an LCD monitor at a lower resolution is quite unsatisfactory, especially text.

Even with large font in Windows 2000/XP, font is still too small for a 17' or 18' LCD under 1280X1024.

Of couse, I can customize the font to be even bigger. However, such customization may not work vey well on certain websites.
As a result, when I surf some websites, the font may looks really tiny because the design of those website are not flexible to use the customized large font.

Thanks!

Have you tried the old CTRL-scroll trick?

Can you explain a bit about the old CTRL-scroll trick?

I am not very familiar with the trick you mentioned.

When viewing a web page, you hold the CTRL key and scroll up or down to adjust text size. Also works in many other applications, such as Word.

While I do not have a Dell 1801FP I do have an 1800FP. I can tell you that this 18" LCD has more viewable area than most 19" monitors. Windows looks great in 1280x1024. I also play BF Vietnam in 1024x768 and it looks great to me. There is a quality loss in non-native resolutions but I can never see the difference while I am playing in a game. Things move so fast normally that I just never stop to worry about it. Just my $0.02...

The CTRL-scroll trick works the same way as you change the font through "View/TextSize/Smaller...Medium...Larger" in Internet Explorer. While it works for most well-designed websites, it does not work for some websites, where you just cannot enlarge the font size. In that case, fonts are extremely small under high resolutions such as 1280*1024.

Burged,
How does the text look like under 1024*768?
I know that games, movies, and pictures are probably ok under 1024*768. I am more concerned about texts under 1024*768.

I am not sure. I will try it tonight and perhaps try to snap a photo if I can get it to come out right.

On the font size thing... You can override the font size specified on some sites if you are using Internet Exploder by doing the following:

Tools > Internet Options > Accessability > Ignore font sizes specified on web pages

That may do the trick for you.
