Adobe Premiere Pro 7.0 Create Clips

any one know how to create clips of a large .avi file that has already been captured and placed on my hard drive?

for the life of me i can't figure this out. i just started messing with adobe premire pro 7.0. i was using windows movie maker 2.0 with some success, but had a few glitchy things and wanted to try something a little more robust.

searched google and all of techimo for the answer, but nada. in windows movie maker, it was relatively easy, you imported the file and hit "create clips" and the large file was split into clips where it deemed appropriate (where the camera recording stopped/started).

i really don't want to capture 7 hours of video again on premiere just to get the clips.

if no one has the answer......any good online resources for adobe premiere? when searching for online tutorials....all i get are sites selling books. i should be able to find this online!

not familiar with that version but...
open premeire
go thru the bs/new project/etc just take the defaults
import file(s)
that should place your files in a bin-put them in the two window thingyand from that point on just cut and paste to the timeline.
if you dont know what that is use the help in the program

Hmm.... I used it for a while in a class I took. That was 6.0... but if nothing has changed, I beleive there is a tool that looks like a razor blade that should do that. I may be wrong, but its worth trying I guess.

ok...i see the razor tool. this only makes a cut where i deem necessary........ok i guess, but window movie maker would cut the entire .avi file into clips that were based on when the recording started and stopped with the camera. then i could merge and cut as necessary.

the razor will work, but i can't imagine that premire doesn't have something like movie maker.

that's one colored ball i liked. actually made the process much easier to start out. is there a secondary program that will take a large .avi and split it into smaller .avi?

i think you are asking your question incorrectly.
you want to ask if there is a program that will automatically split a large avi file into individual clips based on when the recording started and stopped with the camera.

this might be a work around-use windows program to split the clip and then import all the clips into premeire.'

Good luck and good night

the windows program doesn't actually split the avi, it just maps the clips. the large avi stays intact on the hard drive it, so it only works within movie maker itself.

thanks for the ideas; maybe someone will be able to help out in the morning.

one more question......if i import the file with premiere from my dv camera does it create clips based on when recording started and stopped or will it store it as a large avi like i already have.
