Newbie Hooking Up SATA..HELP!!!

I just got a new PC that i ordered online.First Mistake...LOL

Anyway...ASUS P4P800 Delux motherboartd, 1gig ram,Radeon 9800 Pro video card. Maxtor 80gig Serial ATA Hard Drive..yadda yadda..
Anyway...I finally got everything up and running after 3 days of aggravation. But i am curious why things arent what they seem..
I have the MAxtor plugged into the ATA connector on the Motherboard.
Secondary Western Digital 80gig IDE hard drive jumpered as Slave plugged into the blue Primary IDE connector.Next my CD burner is SCSi so thats no biggy..Last my DVD burner is in the Secondary IDE slot.

Are all these compatable together???

In the BIOS the Maxtor comes uop as THIRD Primary Master???
While my WD hard drive comes up as Secondary Primary Slave.

During bootup Primary MAster and Slave as well as Secondary Master and Slave all say Not Present...I dont get it....I know JACK about RAID or if i am even using it or need it....LOL

Any ideas???......Please???

I am not sure of the exact way sata works when you also have other ide drives...

maybe there are things in the bios to choose as to which one to boot off of first etc...

RAID= redundant array of Inexpensive disks....basically it is a way to group drives together for certain advantages.....if you dont know if you are using raid..then you arent,lol...there are extra steps to setup raid etc.

here is a great raid article..or rather some cool pictures describing different types of raid setups

http://www.acnc.com/raid.html

for home type setups, RAID 0 and RAID 1 are most popular.

Well i'm not so much worried about the RAID as i am making sure everything else is right....LOL

I still cant find any reason why the stuff doesnt show during bootup and my ATA Maxtor drive shows up as "Third Primary Master"....Are these Hard drives jumpered somehow....I didnt get any documentation with the thing so i have no clue plus Maxtors site doesnt offer up anything either....I'm running into dead ends everywhere i go!!...LOL

Ive been all thru the BIOS, and i cant see anything that i can change...I pretty PC savy but this has me stumped....

I believe SATA defaults to tertiary primary master by default
I do believe there is a way to change that so SATA comes up as primary master/slave though.
Not sure how on your mobo but maybe something to look into.

You have to have the IDE drive, since it's the only IDE drive, be the master IDE drive. The dvd burner should be the master drive as well since it's on the secondary IDE connector.
If you plan to run your OS from the SATA drive you need to set SATA to boot before IDE. I'm not sure if a slave drive will even show up unless there is a master drive. If the drives still dont show up once in the boot up once you set them as master then there must not be power to them or something.

Actually i remedied some of the issuws....

I went and bought a second ATA Hard Drive. So now Both ATA1 and ATA2 both are Hard drives.I got rid of my IDE Hard Drive.Got rid of the SCSI CD Burner and bought a new IDE DVD/CD Burner.Pioneer DVR-107

SO what your saying is i should plug the DVD into the Blue(Primary IDE) slot and make it Master?

And yes my OS is on the First ATA HD...

Gotcha......You guys have been a big help...

I have been trying left and right for info on how to make the devices show up during boot but nothing as of yet...Weird....
Also i have tried to change the Sequence in the BIOS but it doesnt allow for any of that...
Right now both of my Hard Drives are 3rd and 4th Primary.

In 1987, three researchers at the University of California Berkeley, published a paper called "A Case for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive (Independent has replaced Inexpensive) Disks (RAID)." It described various types of disk arrays, referred to by the acronym RAID. The basic idea of RAID combined multiple small, inexpensive disk drives into an array of disk drives, which yields performance exceeding that of a single large expensive drive. Additionally, this array of drives appears to the computer as a single logical storage unit or drive.
from here

edit I'm to slow robin beat me to it.
