Low memory and windows

Is there any way to get rid of a low memory error other than adding memory or increasing the virtual memory settings? I have someone with a 600m and adding memory isn't an option but it keeps giving error messages that it is low in memory. It also at one point just "turned itself off" according to her. It came up free of viruses and seems to be working alright whenever I use it.

Any thoughts?

I already upped the Virtual Memory to over a gig, that's why I don't want to up it anymore.

That other post makes sense. I'll try that tomorrow.
