Sharing files between computers with a Dl-604 router

Hi all,

Even though I've built no fewer than 30 computers, I've never hooked up a network. I'm trying to share files between my Dell 5100 laptop and 400SC desktop (both running XP Pro). I thought I was doing ok, as the internet is available to both machines, but what do I need to do to get files shared? I'm using a D-Link Dl-604 router.

Thanks in advance.

Humbled in ignorance, -LC

both of your pc should have a LAN card. for two pc's you can either connect both directly using a crosscable or use a hub/switch to connect both. then just use the network wizard of XP to do the rest of the job. good luck. btw, you can also search the forum for previous topics like this..

You gotta let your hard drive to be shared by right clicking it, then going into properties to security. You can share your hard drive that way.

Thanks, Dax_Brandy, but is the hub you speak of my DL router?

oh yes, i missed the router part. yes, you can use your router which i believe has a four (4) port Switch. the cable to be used now is the 'straight' cable. the router/switch is used for internet broadband connection sharing over the network.

basically if they are already hooked to the router then they are ready to share.

file and printer sharing should be enabled already by default.

just try to right click a file or folder and look for the sharing options

for instance lots of people share "my documents"...so you can share that...after you share it, it will have a little "hand" symbol under it to let you know it is shared.

then go to the other computer and look in "my network places" and see if you see the files..or you may have to click on "view workgroup computers" etc

--

one thing that will snag up a network is if the xp firewall is on..so definitely check that if you are having problems

---

since they are both xp pro, then they should both already have the same workgroup name "mshome"...so if you later try to add, say, a win98se comp...remember that it will have "workgroup" as its default name...so you have to change it to "mshome" also.

Have you got firewalls running on your computers?
If so they would need configuring to accept local traffic.
Get your ip addresses, run-cmd-ipconfig.
make sure you have shared folders on your puters.
Then go run - \\ip address of computer you want to connect to (maybe \\192.168.x.x).
You may have to give a name and password for the remote computer.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone!

I'm not quite sure exactly which action caused it, but networked I am. I can finally dump my laptop files and wipe/reinstall XP Pro on the lappy without all the extra Dell crap.

I think turning off the xp firewall did the trick(Thx JP), but that leads to a follow-up question: if I have Sygate firewall installed on each box, is that secure enough? I want to share files with myself, but not with some of the hackers I've probally gotten help from in this very website! Is Sygate cool?

Thanks again for any and all efforts.
