well you need to start by removing some startup utilities using the msconfig program

go to Start>Run>msconfig>startup

then uncheck some things you do not need on startup like quick time and other apps that arent essential

do not uncheck sys tray

good luck and this should definitley improve the performance

65% isn't too bad. How much memory do you have?

i had 96 mb memory and i got it to 80% so unless you have 64 mb or something you should try to get it to 80%

I have 1GB of memory, and I have about 67% left. Come to think if it, I'd like to get more out of it. But still, with this much ram thats a lot of free memory.

System resources is a limitation left over from the original DOS days. Your programs actually function in the 1st 640k of memory. No matter if you have 16mb of ram or 512mb. In DOS you used a command [loadhigh] in the autoexec.bat file to load as many programs into high memory [above 640k] as possible. When Win9x runs low on system resources it is the same problem. Best way to fix this problem is to have as few programs as possible loading when Windows starts. Open the task box and see how many things are running. If you have 20 things running get rid of some of them. As posted above if you can get your pc to boot with 80% that is pretty good. If it is in the 60's I would work on it.
NOTE: buying more memory doesn't resolve this issue

yeah, its not really the exact same as memory.....in other words adding memory doesnt really add "resources"

what you need to do is turn off any extra stuff that you dont need to start everytime at startup....for instance any kind of "junk" like ----gator, weatherbug, msn messanger, aim,ms office startup etc etc.

In xp there are tons of things running in the background...they are called "services"...many of them arent really needed...for instance "netmeeting remote desktop sharing"....or "smart card helper" etc etc. So you can turn off some of those to free up some resources. go to www.blackviper.com and check out his "xp services configurations"...I pretty much use his "safe" configuration except I leave "system restore" on.

----

in win98se..the only things you really NEED to be on are "systray" and "explorer"....and of course if you are running antivirus you need it on.

When you build a fresh install of win98se you usually have something like 97 or 98% resources free....so you can run "msconfig" to try to see what all is starting that you might not really need.

or check out this program..its a little better than msconfig cuz it shows more locations where things start from

startup control panel

I agree with what has been said above: 60% is a sign that there are programs running that should not be and so on and so forth...

More memory increases performance in some areas, but System Resources, to my knowledge is a measurement comprising about three items; one of which includes 16-bit type stuff of which there is a limit.

I think that once you have exhausted that resource the computer will start to freeze up and it Win98 will say System is Dangerously Low of Resources Close Programs to Free Up Memory

or something like that ...

It is, to my knowledge a limitation of Win98...

When your computer is down to 20, 40 and 60 you will most likely need to take steps to reinstall Windows.

At least close down programs using Msconfig..but be aware that often the only way to solve the problem elegantly is to reinstall.
