yeah, its not really the exact same as memory.....in other words adding memory doesnt really add "resources"
what you need to do is turn off any extra stuff that you dont need to start everytime at startup....for instance any kind of "junk" like ----gator, weatherbug,msn messanger,aim,ms office startup etc etc.
In xp there are tons of things running in the background...they are called "services"...many of them arent really needed...for instance "netmeeting remote desktop sharing"....or "smart card helper" etc etc. So you can turn off some of those to free up some resources. go to
www.blackviper.com and check out his "xp services configurations"...I pretty much use his "safe" configuration except I leave "system restore" on.

in win98se..the only things you really NEED to be on are "systray" and "explorer"....and of course if you are running antivirus you need it on.
When you build a fresh install of win98se you usually have something like 97 or 98% resources free....so you can run "msconfig" to try to see what all is starting that you might not really need.
