Redhat fanatic, Fedora?

I am as some already know a Redhat fanatic. Its my favorite Linux distro. Right now I am using Redhat (Shrike) 9.0 and I heard a while ago about the Fedora project that Redhat started. I didnt give much attention to it though since I was enjoying Redhat and didnt need to upgrade. But now that Redhat is not offering support to their products, I was thinking of maybe going for Fedora after all. Should I? I heard its really Redhat, but with a different name, and that the whole OS is basically Redhat I am used to. Is this true? Should I get the .iso files and install this Linux distro in my computer? Is it necessary? I can handle the basic stuff in Redhat, and it took me time to, so I dont want to start over again with Fedora. But if its like Redhat 9.1, only they changed the name then I would maybe give it a try. What do you think?

I tried them both(still have RH9 but had to remove Fedora when I sold the comp it was on)and I did'nt see a whole lot of difference. Yes, Fedora is basically RH except you do updates with YUM instead of Up2Date. I'd wait for Fedora Core 2.

But is it true that they stopped supporting Redhat after the release of Fedora? For me its not difference since I still dont get support because I use the free versions of the distros. I just wanted to know how they are doing. Also I heard Fedora is a open source project, and that means they will not sell their distro, its free for everybody. If there arent many changes I think I will use Redhat until Fedora Core 2 comes out. Thanks lynch for you respons.

I thought they were ending support for RH9 in April.

I heard they already ended the support for it, in December if I remember correctly. Maybe I am off track, please correct me if I am.

Support for the older versions of redhat (7.1 through 8.0) ended at the end of December. Support for 9 ends April 30th.

I dunno, but I've been using FC1 (Fedora Core 1) since nearly the day it came out, and it is a mighty fine distro.

And yes, it is pretty much just like RedHat, down to the inclusion of all the "redhat-config-foo" tools. Except now they're called "system-config-foo" (where foo is the name of the tool).

It's been quite solid, though you'll need to update like crazy once you get it (kde 3.2 is out , as are new kernel versions, and many programs/libraries have been updated).

Also, it plays well with the 2.6.X kernel, which you can get precompiled for FC1 in an easy rpm format right here.

KDE 3.2.1 rpms for fedora are here.

The official download page for yum (getting the latest version is highly recommended, and last time I did, it came with a nice set of repositories all set up) is here.

Happy hunting.

Well, if they still support Redhat 9.0 then I will use it for a while since I dont really need to change distro. I was just curious about the Fedora project and how its going.

Sam, thanks for the information. I think I will wait for the Core 2 of fedora, since I will have to update it like crazy, as you said, if I get the Fedora Core 1.

I know its not that bad to update, cant be worse than Windows Update, now can it? But I think I will wait even so, because I like Redhat 9.0 and I dont need no upgrade right now. Fedora maybe later.
