Can't access registry or control panel - win98se home pc.
I have a customer who owns a win98se (home) machine and needs to un-install Norton Anti-Virus but can't access the control panel (?)and he can't access the registry either. I haven't been there yet (will be later today though) and I was hoping that I could get some quick suggestions (or list) of things that could be happening here. I know there are ways to lock users out of these areas but how do you get in when you have to and don't know how they got locked in the first place?
Client swears he has no idea how (other people do have access to the machine which is just a home pc) how. They haven't been into the control panel for a long time. Somebody's (accidently?) locked them out their own registry and some (if not all) control panel applets and they need my help.
Any clues? I'm thinking tweak-ui or some other tweak style app could be at work or it could be a Norton Utilities app or some type of a user profile is in use. It's the registry that I'm most concerned about. Is there a utility that will get me in no matter what? I've already given him the lecture regarding other people's access to his machine.
