Welcome to TechIMO and congrats on your first computer.

To make ID badges and signs, you'll need a word processing application, such as MS Word or MS Works or Wordperfect from Corel. In all likelihood, one of these is already installed on your system. Look around see what applications you have. Post back if you need some pointers.

MS Word has a feature for making labels. Do you have Word?

Windows XP is an operating system, you can't make labels or badges with your OS.

Unless Stonecold 34 is "pulling our collective leg"... I think -- given this is a "first computer" -- a recommendation to take some basic park district, local library or junior college computer orientation/instruction classes seems warranted here. Following with some basic word programming class.

Or, he could "hang: here for a few weeks and go for a MCSE cert.

He could probably get an MCSE as is

What they're asking is, what does it say when it comes up like you want to write a letter at the top of the screen in the blue bar (title bar). It should say something like "Microsoft Word - Untitled" or "Wordperfect - Untitled."
