Strange Desktop Icon Problem [WinXPpro]

hiya guys,

i go into properties, settings, then do the customize desktop button where you can change your icon for my documents, computer, etc. i change it to some icon i have stored on my computer, and the next time i boot up it reverts back to the regular windows xp icon.

very annoying/confuzzing

any help greatly appreciated!
