linking 2 computers using nic cards

Ok I have win xp on both systems, the main one is an asus with 2 nic cards built into the mother board. The other one is a pentium III with a nic card in it also ... I would like to link them together and have them both work off my cable modem without having to use a hub and such

well to use your cable you will need a router....to connect them dirrectly you could use a crossover cable then get another NIC for the modem on one computer and share you computer but using a router is much better....and you can find them rather cheap now

For two computers, all you need is a Ethernet crossover cable. A crossover cable has the transmit/receive wires flipped at one end so you can directly network two computers without a hub or switch. Be sure to buy a dedicated crossover cable, not a standard Enthernet cable that you will find at most retail stores.

Just plug in the crossover cable to each computer, then follow the Windows networking setup guide. If you are using Win98SE or newer for each system, then the process will take you only a few mouse clicks to enable Internet connection sharing.

Hope this helps,
Robert Richmond

Here is a site that has some. You should check reseller ratings before purchasing from here, never purchased from here.

PCImicro offers crossover cable lengths up to 100 feet for under $20 with free shipping. Search for "crossover cable" from the home page.

http://www.pcimicro.com/

The store also has a good ResellerRatings rating.

BTW, I am glad you finally found TechIMO, even if it was my brother that directed you to the site.
