How long has the OS been installed on the system?

Did you do anything before the problem that could have caused the lockups? (installed drivers, new hardware, installed software,..etc.)

Has the laptop ever been opened or worked on?

I would personally try to first analyze the system to see if the problem is due to simple software issues or settings. End processes in task manager that are not needed and see if the problem still exists. Try closing or disabling some programs in the bottom, right hand corner of your task bar and see if the problem still exists. Check "msconfig" and delete any useless programs that load on startup. Just some simple solutions to start with. Be careful though whenever you make your decisions in deleting useless programs/processes. Start simple and work to the hard stuff.

Since laptops are hard to troubleshoot on a hardware basis, laptop manufacturers usually develope a diagnostic program for thier laptops that tests all of the hardware inside. The utility works great and is a good start in troubleshooting hardware (makes you feel good knowing that nothing is wrong with the expensive hardware). Your problem is probably not due to hardware issues since your system is so new, but it is always a possibility.
