Win xp\xp pro install

ok let me stop pulling out my hair now

i just bought new parts for my computer:

abit nf7s mb
amd barton 2500+
corsair xms 512mb pc3200
antec 430w psu
thermalright slk 947u

-cd drive is clean
-winxp cds are clean

ok i installed all the parts
the problem started when i started the comp
it got to the boot screen (win xp ....) and then it would restart
so after a while of me watching it restart and trying to change some bios settings i formated
i then tried to install winxp .. it would get to copying setup files and at 28% it would restart.. it was copying driver.cab at that time, which is 73megs

i tried changing cdrom .. same thing happened
changed ram .. same thing happened

i fdisked .. deleted partition.. created partition.. formated .. tried to install.. same thing happened

i then del\create partition\format
and tried to install win2000 pro.
IT WORKED!!

then i decide to install win xp pro
the setup screen comes.. prepares files.. copies the files to hd .. then it restarts
it goes back to that boring blue windows setup screen
starts to copy setup files
and then
IT RESTARTS AGAIN AT DRIVER.CAB!!

i have no idea whats wrong
if any of you have ideas please let me know
thanks in advance

Humm.... Sorry this really is not going to help you... But, my laptop did something similar while installing XP. It would reboot upon starting up while installing clean. It would always reboot at the point where you had to press F8 to continue. I just kept trying until this one time it actually worked! Weird tho.

Assuming that you didn't nail the mboard (not a knock against you, but it is possible cuz they're SO fragile) and you haven't already fixed this (also possiible), then I'd 1st clear the CMOS via the mboard jumper. Then I'd boot to the BIOS setup, set the date/time, then pick the Load Optimal Settings (or the equiv) menu option. You'll prob need to change the boot order to CDROM/Floppy/IDE-0. Then, give XP another shot.

This sucker is crashing at a pretty basic level and these are the procedures I've had success w/ when I have mysterious crashes w/ a certain mboard model (not yours) that has since stopped giving me grief. HTH....Jet

Try what Jetman said first. If the problem still exists, it could also be two other things. You may need to flash your bios to the newest possbile version. There may be something you are lacking in your old bios. If that doesn't do the trick, it could also be the hard drive. I have come across some bad hard drives upon installation of all Windows. The main problems I usually see in setting up a system with a bad HD is: format problems or installation problems (missing/corrupt files...etc.). I have also experienced some "instant reboots" with bad HDs.

The motherboard could also be a problem, but since you had a successful installation with Win 2000, I wouldn't really expect that.

BTW, what type of HD do you have. You can try to download a HD diagnostic utility from the manufacturers website and run it. Maxtor has a very good testing program called PowerMax for their HDs.

Have you tried flashing the bios with a newer version? This may not be the problem, but you may want to check your version and compare it with the newer ones listed on the motherboard's website.

One more thing: is your WinXP updated to SP1 ? If not, check TechIMO for a ref to slipstreaming XP Pro to SP1. I'm pretty sure I got the info from here. I've seen that fix a previously funky system. HTH....Jet
