refresh rates is how fast your monitor draws the new screen for you to see. This is measured in Hertz. Depending on your monitor, your refresh is limited by what screen resolution you have it set on. The higher your resolution (smaller icons and more screen space), the lower refresh rate you can have. Example, 800x600 or 1024x768.
You said you are currently at 60Hz. Idealy you want your refresh at 75Hz and above to reduce eye strain. Can you see your screen flicker a little? Do you get headache after being in front of the computer for a long time? If so, then raising your refresh to 75Hz or close to that will help eliminate those symptoms.

upping refresh rates can depend on your grafix card and screen resolution settings and colour settings............if u go to display properties and set the res to 1024x768 then set colour to 32-bit....click apply then take a deep breath as your screen adjusts........this done. click advanced-monitor and check the box that says hide modes that this monitor cannot display, and if u still have say 85 hz avaialable then set to 75 or 80.
BTW i take it u are using a crt monitor ( like a small fat tv) if so then upping the rates by this amount should be safe you will notice a steadier image on screen.
if u are using an lcd (thin flat) monitor then 60 will be plenty.
NICE AVATAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

It should come back after 15 seconds, if it dosent work.
If it dosent restart the PC manually, and as soon as u reset, repeadidly press F8, then a screen will come up. Boot into safe mode. after you in windows, Restart.

Ok, thanks. I'm gonna put mine up to 85. I thought it was already there, but the new nVidia drivers must have reset it.

bingo, with your monitor, you should set it at 85hz. At 72hz, i still get headaches after a couple of hours.

just incase u were wondering, the refresh rate also can effect your fps in certain games due to "V-sync": what that does is draws the fps at the same rate as the vertical refresh, which produces a smoother, crisper screen... but certain games you need the extra fps, so you turn off v-sync....
that was just incase you wanted to know, not related to your problem/question though
