Laptop DVD problem..is it bad?

A Dell 8100 Inspiron laptop......when you put a dvd in it, it doesnt seem to read it....it doesnt show up in my computer etc...but it reads cd's ok.

Previously, and now also...it pops up some microsoft help screen showing that you need a dvd decoder download...when you click on that it goes to some pay-for download of some programs. The user was using interactual dvd player (junk, lol)

until recently it was playing dvds but it would crash out halfway thru or something....

So is it just the dvdplayer itself which has died..since it doesnt even show the dvd inserted in "My Computer"

are these propriatary or no??



How much would it cost to replace...its a samsung cd/dvd...I think its a model "308" something or another....

can anyone help me out here?? I need to get a replacement for this drive....do I have to order from Dell or is there any cheaper route etc??

also..if I have to get one from dell..where do I find it on their site??

ok....I have concluded that the CD DVD combp drive is bad....

it is a "Samsung SN 308B 8X Slim Combo"

Dell part# 6J545 Item# 313-2511

IS this a standard drive I can get from somewhere else?? Dells prices are ridiculous


I need help as soon as possible cuz the owner is returning back to Spain in 1 week so I have to order a part and get it installed etc by then
