Different E-mail Clients

I am totally new in all these different e-mail options. The only e-mail I have used until now is Hotmail. I dont know much about e-mails based on POP3, IMAP, etc. Could someone explain the differences to me? I have used some POP3 based e-mails, and I know you have to have a different e-mail program such as Outlook to be able to use them. Not like Hotmail, where you check your e-mails online. Some have though Webcheck for your POP3 e-mails. I just want to understand the differences, and the benefits of each one. Thanks

dan

I have both online email (hotmail + others) as well as a POP3 account. I like both, for different reasons. With the POP3 account, I can D/L mail directly to my machine directly and only be online long enough to do so...no signing in or out. Outlook Express (a part of all Windows installs) will allow automatic connections online, check and D/L any mail waiting and then shut down the connection...total online time is just a few minutes and your mail is waiting when you have time to read it.

Just one of the many benefits of a POP account.

any good free pop3 forwarding email accounts? i 've been using hotpop but with limited features only.

pop3 accounts lets you download your mails directly to your outlook, mozilla mail or outlook express.

Here they list many free POP3 based e-mail clients. By the way, what about IMAP based e-mails? I know a bit of POP3, but almost nothing about IMAP.

IMAP is both web based and will work with an email client. It basically doesn't delete your messages on the mailserver after you retrieve them like POP3 does.
