Is that a PCI winmodem?...

Have you had good service with this modem before now...and all of a sudden it has failed?..

You can try going into Device Manager, highlite your modem and click remove. Reboot the computer and allow Windows to find and reinstall the modem.

Have you added any hardware recently?..after which the modem has begun not working properly?

if its a new modem....some modems dont work right unless its an "mmx" cpu....Im not sure about the Pentium 166...maybe some were MMX and some werent back then.

Is it a new modem or was it working before?

----

also go to the run box and run "sfc"...then "scan for altered files"....it will scan for system files that have been altered...if it finds any you can replace them using the win98se cd or the cab files if they are on your hard drive....(it will find "setupx.dll" as an altered file..just click "ignore" for that one..it always finds that one....but if it finds others..replace them.

---

you could try "drwatson"...by going to the run box and typing "drwatson" (without quotes)...then a little icon will appear in the system tray....double click that icon and see what it tells you. Also try the connection again while the icon is in the tray...sometimes it can find problems and tell you the cause etc.

JP

If worse comes to worse....you can put in the windows cd and run setup again from within windows...that will overwrite the system files maybe fixing the problem.

um, im not sure if its a PCI winmodem...it says 56k IFX. but, i have had good service with this modem up until now. i tried going into device manager, and everytime i tell it to remove the modem, it brings up the modem.cpl message again and doesnt remove it. I did put an ethernet card in it a while ago, but, ive since taken that out(and i believe the modem worked after it was out...but, im not sure).
thanks for tryin to help

try the sfc and drwatson stuff I described.

Also with sfc there is an option to "extract one file from installation disk"....you can do that and choose to extract the "modem.cpl" file....it will ask where to restore it from..and you can browse to the "Win98" folder on the windows cd...and it will ask "save file in"...and for that you put "c:\windows\system" (without the quotes)

modem.cpl is a part of the control panel that alters settings for the modem. There is a posibility that the file has become corrupt and therefore cannot pass the settings onto the driver to tell it what to do.
