Online Music Services - Booooo

http://www.fortune.com/fortune/peter...8157-2,00.html

ALL online services where you can download music legally use lame File formats
Either WMA, AAC (Apple) or Real Audio BLECH.

I don't think MP3 supports DRM yet, so I can understand but until they can move away from these lamer proprietary formats I won't budge on it.

WMA with DRM requires WMP9... NO THANKS

Ya MP3 is proprietary but at least it works on multiple OS's.

It'd be great if there was a company that sold without DRM, but we know the RIAA would jump down their throat immediately... least we can do is get a format that doesn't suck

DRM formats suck. I can play them on one device and not another? No thanks.

They can shove DRM you know where.

An extra step but easy enough to do, Download Burn CD (I think you can use a virtual drive to save a CD if you wish) then Rip the CD back to MP3 without protection.

I tend to agree, vass0922.

Being able to purchase legal music is great. Having to play it on WMP 9 , or "only on an iPod" is not.

Someone needs to develop a DRM standard that all music players, both software and hardware, can work with.

When I can start playing purchased music in my jetAudio player, then I'm in. Till then, I'll stick with my CD collection.

These services are worthwhile enough to make freeloading not worth the effort, whether or not the RIAA police are sniffing around. The quality is consistent, its easy, and quick.

The original files you download have DRM. Depending upon what kind of effort you want t put into the situation, you can derrive mp3s.

P2P is still necessary to find the out of print!

what link do you need Emc2? goto www.apple.com download Itunes... buy songs and then burn a CD with the itune software. Then Rip it with what ever software you want, you could use windows media player to make em wma and make sure you turn of protection, it will ask you if you want to use protection the first time you copy a CD to your Hard drive. You would have to ask others about burning to a virtual drive as I havent done it my self but I have heard of othes talking about burning stuff to virtual drives similar to how you can copy a CD to an ISO and then mount it with a virtual drive like D-Tools. Maybe another thread maybe needed.
