Linksys BEFW11S4 Corrupted????

Alright here's the deal:

The other day I was surfing around on a pc that is connected across the network and I get this message that the server could not be found.

I go over to the pc whom is the first conec to the Router and, low and behold, that one is also not getting a signal.

I then turn on my wife's laptop and try the wireless signal and nothing.

So I call up the cable company to see if the internet service is down. This guy has be running this way and that, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, disconnect the cable router from the modem, and connect the modem back to the PC.

So all the while he is asking questions of his boss at work I remember that I just installed Zone Alarm. I have had problems with it before and so I decide to uninstall it. (Let me give you history on why I installed Zone Alarm in the first place. I was experiencing this "internet blackout" intermittently before so I thought someone was hitting my pc from outside. So I installed it and everything worked fine until this whole shebang blew up!)
I uninstall it and the guy at the cable company is like try the ipconfig /release & /renew so, I try it and Bang, I'm back on the internet. Thank you's to him and all and then I hang up.

I try to connect back up the router and everything and then, nothing!!! I get internet activity for a few minutes and then the server can not be found. I decide to do a direct connect from the modem to the 1st pc and get back on line.

I go to Trend Micro and do a scan, WORM found!!! So I hit delete since the files could not be cleaned (mind you, I forgot to write down the name of the worm so don't ask) and then I follow some directions to modify the reg for some stuff. I try to hook the router up again and NOTHING!!

So, now I'm here doing a hard reset on the router and am going to try it again. If I recall correctly the worm access my pc and creates a DoS attack or something........

Please help, I think I still have the worm somewhere on the pc or, a little bit more harsh, the Router has been permenantly corrupted (is that even possible)...

Sorry for the book, just wanted you all to know what the deal is.

Also, running WinXP on the 1st and 2nd pc

Let me ask you this.. do you have Antivirus Software?

You should do a full scann of all your computers...

Also get Adaware and or Spybot and scan also with them.

Make sure all your computers are clean.

Reset the router.

Try again.

If it keeps happeninng it's probably the router..

It has happened to me.

in fact... a couple of days ago I was having the same problem... (conection kept droping). I bought a new router, and problems solved.

HOW?

How the hell did you get rid of it?

I'm not on a network, but I've got this damned protoride worm too. I just CANNOT get rid of the thing.

I've tried numerous antiviruses, tried all the adaware/spybot stuff; also tried the Symantec removal instructions, and still cannot get rid of it.

It used to just appear as msupdate.exe in the starup folder in the start menu, now it sometimes appears as winpdate.exe and winocx32.exe as well I think; the msupdate.exe was easy enough to get rid of, you just end the process and delete the file, restore the .exe extension key in the registry and carry on (lost sount of the number of times I've tried this now), but winupdate.exe doesn't show up in the task manager, so I can't end it and delete; but even if I did, I reckon it would reappear within a few days anyway. There HAS to be some other file that keeps dropping these .exes in my startup folder.

ANY information on this thing is more than welcome as it is doing my nut in. None of the AV manfacturer's sites are any use either.

Easiest way to get rid of most any virus/worm....
Backup any data,
Format MBR and Partitions, reinstall windows, run windows updates, install antivirus/firewall and the rest of the apps u want to use

Correction. This is the ONLY way to get rid of them. Yes, you can remove registry keys and such, but once compromised you have no way of knowing. And you have to restore from a known good/clean backup that you made BEFORE the infection, otherwise you are wasting your time.

Yeah, and it doesnt matter much when you can't use your computer for what you want. May as well turn it off.

And before you start with the hooey about functionality, it flat isn't there. Connect to an Exchange server? Pay Ximian for the connector.. Forget about games, browser plugins are a pain... You get the picture. It has come a long way, but still has a long way to go.
