When I turn on my Gateway computer, the CPU light turns to green but it doesn't make the sounds like it is fully powering up. The monitor never turns on and always has an orange light lit. Can anyone help with this?

Welcome to TechIMO.

do any of the fans turn on..... if they don't then one possibility is your Power Supply went.

But if the PSU was bad, it wouldn't power up at all would it?

If you, or anyone else, may have modified the settings in the BIOS setup, try resetting those by either using the menu (might not be possible), or taking out the CMOS battery (looks like a watch battery, it's on the motherboard). If no changes have been made, or this doesn't work, check all the memory in its sockets, and if possible, try known working parts such as a power supply, ram, maybe cpu, etc.

If the screen wont come on how would he get the bois menu?

Pulling the CMOS battery would owrk though for resetting the defaults.

I don't know though.... a dying power supply could just have a weak output thats not strong enough to get everything going.... so that makes sense to me.

And yeah... I'd say check everything you can.... computers do weird things when stuff starts going out.

hey dude!
i have a Gateway
and when one day i was trying to turn it on without a heatsink half of the Gateway logo came on and then the system halted. The CPU fan didn't come on, but the power fan did so it's not the same case that you have.

But i have seen the EXACT thing you described happen to a computer at school. The problem was a fried motherboard. they have a lot of power surges at that school and one fried the motherboard in that computer and another killed a large TV...and a microwave oven....
