How can i tell which card i have?

look in device manager under display adapters

incase you don't know
to get to device manager (XP) right click my computer properties hardware tab
9x is similar but can't remember it off the top of my head

is says 9500 pro/ 9700 but the guy i bought it from said it was a 9700 pro

That means its a 9700 NON pro (regular). The dude lied to ya. However, it is very possible to flash the BIOS on the card to PRO status. I did that with mine, worked without a hitch.
