The P4 3.0 is the better processor... Even the P4 2.8 is better. However, the Athlon64 3000+ is a much better processor than the XP 3000+, and it is about equal to the P4 3.0

Athlon 64 was built to be backwards compatible.
Technically it should be backwards compatible and work great... realistically its too early to tell if it will not cause any issues.

To take advantage of 64bit though you do REQUIRE a 64 bit OS.

Athlon 64 bit processors will run apps and games great now and even better in the near future with 64 bit Windows XP comes out. When games go 64 bit it's going to be fantastic!

To answer your question, a 3.0 Ghz P4 with HT @ 800 FSB is faster. The PR ratings given to Athlon XP processors mainly apply to the older 533 FSB P4's and less.

Not true at all. The 64's run 32bit and 64 bit(with a 64bit OS). Since you dont have a 64bit OS, it runs in 32bit mode PERFECTLY. Re: which CPU, I would get the Pentium 4 over the XP3000.

I would humbly disagree with that statement. They have been out since last year and nothing has come up yet.

I disaggree as well... Every single review i've read is almost a pure 32bit test at this point.... Some 64bit here and there, but the vast majority are 32 bit and there hasn't been any problems that I remember reading about. There were SOME issues when the FIRST came out, but that ended up being issues with the boards. Specificially the nForce3's. But even those bugs have been addressed now.
