Screen resolution under Knoppix 3.3
Ho-kayyy...
I've just booted Knoppix 3.3 on my old Gateway Athlon 600, and everything seems copacetic; it found my Internet connection without trouble, and I have no problems getting online via DSL. But: the screen seems to be like 1280X1024 -- tiny type and windows. And when I look at the control panel, it says the resolution is 640X480! I try to change it, and the control panel says there's a new value, but it doesn't change.
I'm an utter n00b here. What do I do to make my screen legible?

Try Ctrl-Alt- +/- (+ or - on the numeric keypad) to toggle between resolutions.
You can also add a resolution when you boot knoppix:
Boot> knoppix lang=us screen=1280x1024
There are a bunch of cheats you can add at boot. Check out this .

Hey, lynchmob, thanks. "Boot> knoppix lang=us screen=800x600" did the trick.
Now I have a second (but related) question. Although the resolution is now correct and Knoppix correctly detects both my video card and my monitor, the images on the screen (especially type) aren't nearly as sharp as they are under Windows. (I'm using a Belkin KVM and I switch back and forth, so it's easy to compare.) Is this a problem with Knoppix's drivers for the card?

Hi Theo. Same resolution on Windows? If so, it could be the Knopppix video driver. You could try turning on anti-aliasing. KDE Control Center > LookNFeel > Fonts. You'll probably need to restart the xserver. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace shuts Knoppix down, so open a terminal and type init 2 and hit "Enter". then, type init 5 and hit "Enter".

Theophylact, sorry for the tardy reply. But Germ is right: anti-aliasing the fonts will help. It may well be the driver but I always got the grainy look in that resolution. I have never been crazy about the look of KDE in 800x600 res.
Germ, I did not know that CAB would shut Knoppix down. Never tried it.

CAB is actually a command issued to the X server. When testing configuration files in FreeBSD I often use the command to drop out of the test configuration and back to the cli.

In Knoppix, it shuts down the comp.

Ahh, well I've never used Knoppix before so that would explain it.
