CAAT Needs Help With M$ WP

Here's the problem:
New Laptop with XP
Old Floppies with Works 97 (Word for Windows '97)
Used Floppy to upload to XP WORKS WP (2003?)
Selected as Format "Word 97 --2002 Wordprocessor"

XP saved WP'97 Doc. as WRITEPAD

Who wants WritePad ?

Some old Floppies are looooong Docs over several Floppies, so WRITEPAD isn't a good venue, i would think.

So what gives ?

-----
Also, just occurred to me:

If text Docs. are saved in XP's Works WP, what happens when a CD-R is read by an older Computer with Word for Windows '97 ?

Will the 'WP'97 be able to open and read the newer Wordprocessor?
(Minor formatting glitches would not be a major problem, as most is straight text.)

Would "Rich Text" help at bridge these two eras ?

ThanX from da CaaT and me,
MegalosSkylaki

If its all just text with some minor formatting then yea Rich Text will work fine. As long as you're not storing images, or centering or anything like that
I believe Rich Text keeps size, bold, italics etc.

I've always avoid the MS works suite as its a pseudo version of office with many limitations... however unfortunatley this seems to be what pre-fab pc vendors always package with because its cheaper

So the thing is (unless i'm missing something) is that it's nothing more than a file extension thing. .doc files are associated with Richard Golden by default. No, wait, i mean wordpad. If you open this explicitly with MS Word 97 it should be fine. Sounds like for whatever reason .doc files aren't associated with MS word.

As long as you save your docs in the Word '97 format, they should remain readable by both.

Like the new(ish) avatar, BTW!

Hope this helps. If not, i guess i'm not understanding the problem correctly...

WHOOOPS ! No I meant .txt files....
So you are on the right track, but about Word'97, the XP WP reverted to Writepad, usually reserved for smaller files. Yes, the test file was small but da Kitten as novels on Flops, so need a full-fledged WP I would suppose. OK, Cyphen ?

Goood news from da Vass0922 --and what ever happened to your "Why doesn't da Vass show his face ? Just who killed it

We'll try Rich Txt. for all as I believe it is ubiquitous for plain text files, like linear narrative.

Being a writer is tough

I think this is a M$ trick to obsolesce their old WP's
I want a piece of the EU fine on M$....

Why not - you sure got a piece of the annoyance!

AVID does the same thing. (They make nonlinear video editing software for the high end) Unfortunately, they're mostly a marketing company so everything they do they try to maximize profit in with little or no concern for their end user. For instance, between almost every "upgrade" they would make their previous version of media unreadable - meaning that in order to share projects between rooms (most post houses have several of their editors - not just one or two) when you upgrade, you'd basically have to upgrade them all. And at over $100,000 a pop, not exactly chump change... AVID bought the product i use now (which used to be great) from of al places, M$, and they just released a new version - and yet again, guess what? The media is no longer compatible with previous versions, meaning all of our years of projects can't be brought back and used with it... GRRRRR!!!

Sorry for the tangentia......

So yeah, sounds like in order to maintain compatibility, you'll need a full-fledged Word Processor - but on the plus side, i know you can install MS office 97 on XP - and it works just fine... So if you still have the install discs, you could just do that...

[CaaT CAAT ThanX to All !]

Hey ! How come I didn't think of installing Word97 before we left NYC ?

Dumb DooG trick # 4.78 X 10 to power of 7

Anyways, have and old version of Works SBE which I bought with documentation and # at Flea Market for a Buck.

(The male deer was eating too much.)

Otherwise M$ would say I violated EULA by having same SW on two Computers !

Hey ! Is that true: you put SW on Lappy that is on Desktop --need second set of $W ? ?

Anyhow, soon we will be 'turning to the BeeG Apple and leaving CA in Chaos.

Or is that Knothead's fault?

ThanX,

DOOOOOOOOOG
